Data Scientist Job Opening (Life Actuarial Team)

Responsibilities: Our client is looking to expand their world class team of Data Scientists! This is a team of 8 currently. The Data and Analytics team (Actuarial based) develops and implements data and analytics based solutions for the Actuarial, Underwriting, Operations, Risk and Marketing areas. You will be called on to create and maintain up to date cutting edge solutions specifically including predictive modeling (statistical, machine learning), optimization and simulation. Experience Studies is a big plus!  

This is a position designed for someone with an Actuarial background who has made the decision to move into true Data Science and (Predictive Modeling). In order to be considered you must have at least 2-3 years of Life Insurance or Retirement (Pension/Annuity) Actuarial experience. Predictive Modeling experience is also required.   

Analysis of Mortality and Lapse experience is key. The company is also looking to modernize the assumption setting process. Additionally, you will work on development of cutting-edge predictive and triage modeling for Life Underwriting.   

We are looking for someone who is a team player and interested in working in a highly collaborative and entrepreneurial environment. You need to be comfortable working with business stakeholders on project work, interface with the Data Engineers with regard to data sources and database queries, model validation, documentation and presentation for reporting to senior leadership.



BS/BA in Math/Statistics required – Masters/PhD in Statistics preferred.

ASA (or very close to completion)


3+ years of life insurance/actuarial experience required. (Mortality, Experience Study is a plus)

2+ years (predictive modeling) required

Experience study for mortality and lapse background strongly preferred.

Solid understanding of Individual life insurance underwriting preferred.


Strong working knowledge of R preferred, Python is OK.

Spreadsheet and database capabilities (Excel, SQL).

Visualization experience helpful (Tableau, Spotfire, QlikView)

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Documentation skills.

Project management skills.

This is a full time permanent position offering competitive base salary, annual company bonus and outstanding benefits which include both a matching 401k and a Pension. Salary will range from 90-115k (depending on experience and education) plus bonus of 15-20%.

Full relocation assistance will also be offered to the selected candidate (remote is not an option).
